Anticancer activity of Young Barley

The immense popularity of young barley is due mainly to its ability to accelerate metabolism and the burning of fat. Nevertheless, considering the abundance of nutrients and other substances with acknowledged beneficial effects for the human body, the possibilities of its use are much greater. This study summarizes the current state of knowledge about the health-beneficial properties of young barley.

Young barley has the superpower of the superoxide dismutase enzyme. Thanks to that, and also thanks to peroxidase proteins and catalase enzymes (it is simply about the enzymes necessary for most chemical reactions in our body), it neutralizes and helps suppress the reproduction of cancer cells. It is not a medicine and yet it helps with treatments and self-healing.

The Institute for Preventive Medicine, Nutrition and Cancer, Folkhälsan Research Center, Finland, has confirmed that lignans have anti-carcinogenic properties and they help treat many types of cancer. Barley contains certain types of phytonutrients known as plant lignans, which are transformed by the friendly flora in our intestines into mammalian lignans. One of these new lignans is called enterolactone, which helps prevent breast and other hormonal cancers as well as coronary heart diseases. (1)(2)

Barley juice is a powerful immune booster that contains antioxidants. One of these antioxidants is alpha-tocopherol, which may be responsible for the plant's anticancer activity.

Young barley is an excellent source of antioxidants and consequently can prevent diseases associated with oxidative stress, including cancer or neurodegenerative diseases. The anticancer effect of young barley is also associated with its ability to induce apoptosis in cancer cells, improvement in the mechanisms of DNA repair, and prevention of activation of the signalling pathways responsible for carcinogenesis. Carcinogenesis is the formation of cancer, where the normal cells are transformed into cancer cells.

The preparations obtained from young barley are also indicated as a panacea for hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, stomach ulcers, or hypercholesterolemia. Among the advantages of young barley is also the antidepressant effect and improvement of the body’s ability to cope with stress.

The consumption of young barley is also recommended for the treatment of less serious ailments, such as skin problems, burns, or bad breath. The presented review of scientific data revealed a broad spectrum of health-beneficial properties of young barley. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanisms of its action still remain a mystery. Therefore, it is advisable to conduct additional studies to explore this issue.
